Earlier this year, Dr. Jonathan Koppell, dean of Arizona State University’s (ASU) College of Public Programs and director of the School of Public Affairs, led a discussion with the Partnership for Public Service’s Excellence in Government Fellows on the topic of “Leading Change.” The Fellows are federal employees at the GS-14 and GS-15 levels who were taking part in a comprehensive leadership training program.
Two years ago, the ASU School of Public Affairs started offering a new Public Service and Public Policy (PSPP) major to prepare students for careers in public service. This is the first undergraduate professional degree in this major in Arizona. Koppell emphasized the need for public servants’ voices to be heard in shaping what public policy schools should be teaching to meet the needs of the public sector. The Fellows, representing the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other agencies, provided input on how their organizations typically address budget cuts and how a public university could increase and diversify its sources of revenue.
